Here’s a Fontana fact that surprises a lot of people: before the city became widely known for logistics, warehouses, and freeway access, Fontana played an important role in the origin story of Kaiser Permanente in Southern California. When Henry J. Kaiser opened the Kaiser Steel mill in Fontana in 1942, a hospital was created soon after to care for steelworkers and their families. That worker-care model grew into what became the Southern California roots of Kaiser Permanente, one of the most recognized healthcare systems in the country. In other words, Fontana didn’t just help build steel during wartime — it helped shape a major part of modern healthcare history too.

Quick takeaway: Fontana wasn’t just an industrial powerhouse — it also helped launch a healthcare model that would grow far beyond the city.
