🏛️ Hometown HistoryBarstow Edition
Here’s a Barstow fact a lot of locals have probably never heard: part of the rail yard has used gravity to help sort freight cars. At a hump yard, rail cars are pushed over a small raised hill, then allowed to roll downhill into the correct tracks for sorting. In other words, part of Barstow’s rail operation has literally let physics do some of the work. BNSF identifies Barstow as one of its hump yards and says the city has been a rail hub for more than 140 years. Britannica also notes that even after the mining era faded, Barstow endured as a railroad town. So while many people think of Barstow as a Route 66 stop or freeway crossroads, it has quietly remained one of the desert’s most important working rail centers.
