Here’s a Redlands fact a lot of locals have never heard: this city helped shape the way electricity is delivered around the world. In 1893, the nearby Mill Creek No. 1 hydroelectric plant went online and became a major breakthrough in the commercial use of three-phase alternating current power. That may sound technical, but it is actually a big deal — three-phase power is still the standard system used for commercial electricity and long-distance transmission today. So while Redlands is often celebrated for citrus, architecture, and historic charm, it also has a real place in the story of modern infrastructure. Not bad for a city most people would never think to connect with one of the most important advances in power history.
