🏛️ Hometown HistoryAdelanto Edition
Here’s a “wow” Adelanto story most locals don’t hear enough: just west of town is El Mirage Dry Lake — a naturally flat “speed lake” where gearheads have chased land-speed records for generations. People have been racing out there since the 1920s, and it helped fuel the early hot-rod culture that made Southern California famous. 🏁 But the desert near Adelanto isn’t just about roaring engines. Nearby, El Mirage Field (often listed with an Adelanto address) started as a World War II auxiliary airfield — and later became a serious flight-testing hub for unmanned aircraft connected to General Atomics. In other words, parts of the drone era have been quietly taking shape right here in our backyard. 👀 From land-speed legends on the dry lake to cutting-edge aviation nearby, Adelanto’s corner of the High Desert has been pushing the limits of speed and flight for over a century.
