🤯 Wow fact: In August 1956, Palmdale unexpectedly became the stage for a Cold War “battle in the sky.” A bright red Navy F6F-5K Hellcat drone launched from Point Mugu went out of control and drifted inland, so the U.S. Air Force scrambled two F-89 Scorpion jets to shoot it down before it could reach Los Angeles. Over the Antelope Valley, the interceptors fired all 208 of their “Mighty Mouse” rockets—and missed every single shot. The rockets started brushfires and damaged cars and homes in and around Palmdale, burning roughly 1,000 acres, yet by sheer luck no one was killed.
