After World War II, rows of surplus military aircraft helped turn Chino into one of Southern California’s most fascinating aviation-history sites.

Here’s a Chino fact that surprises even a lot of longtime locals: before the city became widely known for agriculture and dairies, Chino played a major role in World War II aviation history. What is now Chino Airport was once home to the Cal-Aero Flight Academy, where more than 10,365 fighter and bomber pilots were trained for the U.S. military. And after the war, hundreds of former combat aircraft were flown into Chino for disposal, creating an incredible scene that briefly made the area look like a giant open-air parking lot for warplanes. It’s one of those hidden pieces of local history that makes you look at Chino in a completely different way.

Quick takeaway: Chino wasn’t just farmland — it was also a surprisingly important part of America’s wartime aviation story.
