1920 Hotpoint advertisement featuring early electric appliances by inventor Earl H. Richardson

Did you know Adelanto was founded in 1915 by Earl H. Richardson—the inventor behind the Hotpoint electric iron—who envisioned a desert health community for World War I veterans with respiratory ailments? Richardson used proceeds from his inventions to buy land and launch a place where the dry High Desert air could help people heal.

Beyond the iron, Richardson popularized early home appliances with whimsical names like El Perco (coffeepot), El Tosto (toaster), and El Eggo (egg cooker). It’s a proud origin story: a city born from innovation and compassion—right here in the High Desert.
