Barstow Edition

WWII Desert Training Center troops near Barstow

Did you know the desert around Barstow was once the site of the largest military training ground in U.S. history? During World War II, the Desert Training Center prepared over a million soldiers for the brutal conditions they’d face in North Africa.

Temperatures often soared above 130°F, sandstorms ripped across the camps, and water was so scarce that soldiers were rationed to just a canteen a day. Many collapsed from heat and exhaustion before adjustments were made.

The desert around Barstow was called “a desert designed for hell” — and yet it forged soldiers who went on to change the course of history.
